The Fort Vancouver

An evolving mission for Southwest Washington

Celebrating 20 years of impact

Firstenburg Foundation Sharpens Focus on Two Key Areas

Over the past two decades, the Foundation has dedicated itself to addressing Southwest Washington’s most pressing needs through a rigorous strategic planning process. By listening to community feedback and analyzing data, we identified houselessness and affordable housing access as critical focus areas. While this mission is new, our commitment to building small nonprofit capacity remains unchanged as we empower grassroots organizations to make a lasting difference in our community.

Why homelessness prevention and affordable housing

Housing costs continue to increase here in Southwest Washington, forcing many of our neighbors into precarious living situations. Unfortunately, the consequences of housing insecurity extend beyond an immediate struggle to find a safe, affordable, and dignified place to live. It also negatively impacts the physical and mental well-being of individuals and families, destabilizes communities, and drives people into houselessness. We believe everyone deserves access to safe and affordable housing, and promoting those goals benefits our entire community.

A strategic choice to assist small nonprofits

The Foundation provides resources to help build capacity within smaller nonprofits and grassroots organizations. We believe these groups understand local needs and solutions better than anyone. Providing grants to these organizations can significantly amplify their mission, fostering enhanced local empowerment and engaged communities.
